FAQ

Frequently asked questions regarding Norsap chairs and deck rails

Which Norsap chair should I choose?

Choosing the right Norsap chair depends on space, seated exposure, load, and the level of equipment integration required. Rather than comparing individual features in isolation, it is often more effective to start with how the seat will be used and what it needs to support.

For high-exposure and high-impact operations, the Norsap 100 Jockey is designed for standing or semi-seated use, providing shock mitigation and control in demanding conditions where traditional seated chairs are not suitable.

The Norsap chair range spans a wide variety of operating environments. From compact solutions like the Norsap 800 Light, to the Norsap 4000 Impulse L chair, designed to support complex workstations with multiple monitors, joysticks, and control panels—often combined with different armrest configurations depending on operational needs.

The Norsap 1100 features an ultra-slim design combined with high comfort, making it a popular choice for superyachts, air carriers, and shore-based facilities where space efficiency is key.

Get a quick overview of each chair series, including the adjustment and feature matrix and how each series differs from each other – here.

Can I integrate joysticks, throttles or control panels into a Norsap chair?

Yes, selected Norsap chairs can be equipped with armrest enclosures, joystick boxes or other control integration solutions.

Norsap 800 and Norsap 1100 are generally not intended for added armrest equipment. Other chair series can support different levels of integration, depending on the component size, weight, cable routing and required mounting position.

To evaluate an integration, we normally need:

  • left or right side location, from the user’s perspective
  • component width, depth and height
  • cable routing, bending radius and number of cables
  • 3D model, CAD drawing or exact make and model

This helps us check whether the component can be integrated safely and practically.

What is the difference between Norsap 800 Light, Norsap 1000 Base, and Norsap 1500 Comfort?

The key difference between Norsap 800 Light, Norsap 1000 Base, and Norsap 1500 Comfort lies in the structural capacity, adjustment range, and level of support the seating system is designed to provide, as operating demands increase.

Norsap 800 Light is a compact and lightweight chair intended for positions with limited space and lower load requirements. It provides essential adjustments and is well suited where footprint and simplicity are the primary constraints.

Norsap 1000 Base builds on the 800 by offering a stronger structure, making it suitable for positions where load increases or where equipment and accessories need to be integrated into the seating position.

Norsap 1500 Comfort is designed for higher load capacity and extended seated exposure. With a larger and more robust frame and increased cushioning, it provides greater comfort and endurance in positions where seating is used more intensively or for longer periods.

The difference between these chairs is not primarily visual, but functional. As space constraints are reduced and load, integration, or seated exposure increases, the progression from 800 to 1000 to 1500 becomes clear — both in how the chair performs and in how it supports the person seated in it.

What is the difference between the Norsap 1600 Standard and Norsap 1800 Active or the 4000 Impulse?

The key difference between Norsap 1600 Standard, Norsap 1800 Active, and Norsap 4000 Impulse lies in the core adjustment mechanism and how the seating system is adjusted, rather than in overall function or appearance.

Norsap 1600 Standard is designed for positions where a clean appearance and a stable seating position are required. It features a fixed carriage with limited adjustability and is well suited for installations where simplicity, space, or aesthetics are the primary considerations.

Norsap 1800 Active builds on this with a more advanced core mechanism that allows for a wider range of ergonomic adjustments. It is designed for positions that require greater fine-tuning of posture, reach, and seating position, as well as integration of armrests, controllers, or other equipment.

Norsap 4000 Impulse shares the same functional concept as the 1800 Active, but replaces manual adjustments with an all-electric adjustment system. This allows adjustments to be made quickly and precisely, which is particularly useful in demanding or high-end installations where frequent adjustment or exact positioning is required.

This difference in functionality becomes apparent when sitting in the chair, even if the exterior design appears similar.

What is the difference between ACTIVE and IMPULSE?

ACTIVE chairs are activated or locked with various gas springs. When you want to adjust one of the settings, you use your body weight to move the selected setting into the desired position.

IMPULSE chairs can easily be adjusted to fit the user with its electric activated adjustments. The custom ergonomic fit can be achieved manually or based on your height using the membrane panel or Norsap Quicksize function.

Does any of the Norsap chairs come with user memory?

As an add-on to Norsap Quicksize, the chair may be fitted with a Norsap personal memory panel that allows up to four unique save slots for any combination of chair adjustments.

Use this for teams where one or more user is given a personal saving slot for their body size.

The Norsap Personal Memory panel recalls any previously saved chair size with one button press.

… but what is Norsap Quicksize?

In order to keep it simple, we made the Norsap Quicksize function, enabling all six electric motors to simultaneously run and adjust arm and leg parameters based on your height. This makes it a breeze to RESET and RESIZE the operator’s chair after the previous shift. Norsap Quicksize may also be used for complimentary adjustments to the arms and leg, speeding up the process when taking over the chair after a shift.

What are NORSOK standards?

The acronym NORSOK represents “the Norwegian shelf’s competitive position” and was introduced in 1994 to cut costs and improve competitiveness on the Norwegian continental shelf.

The Norwegian petroleum industry develops the NORSOK standards. Their purpose is to ensure safety and cost-effectiveness in developments and operations in the petroleum industry. They are intended to replace individual oil company specifications and serve as references for the industry.

You can read more about NORSOK here.

What is the difference between Norsap 150 Explore Performance and Ultimate Performance?

Norsap 150 Ultimate Performance is intended for higher-speed operations and more demanding conditions that require stronger posture support and shock mitigation.

Norsap Ultimate Performance is recommended for heavier users or those needing to carry a lot of gear.

Norsap 150 Explore Performance is intended for lower-speed use, including leisure, patrol and search-and-rescue applications.

You can find the maximum allowed peak acceleration [g] and the total weight of the occupant and seat [kg] (including gear) in a visual representation available here.

What “CargoTrack” is Norsap 100 Jockey compatible with?

“Cargotracks” is a general term for any cargo-securing track system. Norsap 100 Jockey with “CargoTrack” locking mechanism is only compatible with Airline L-Tracks with 25mm pitch and ø20mm.

See Allsafe for more information.

How do I adjust the chair or deck rail?

First, check the manual. If the desired adjustment is not mentioned in the manual, contact Norsap for instructions.

Some adjustments will void the warranty on the chair and components if done without guidance from Norsap.

Do I need to lubricate any moving parts?

Gliding parts on the chair can be lubricated with a silicone-based lubricant.

If the chair is on a deck rail, it is important that the deck rail’s tracks are NOT lubricated.

What should I do when I need spare parts?

You should take a picture or write down the chair model and order number of your chair. The label describing the chair is usually under the seat cushion or footrest. Contact your regional dealer or Norsap head office for delivery times.

Depending on the size and location of the needed part, it may be better to replace the module where the spare part is located. Our sales department will evaluate this in collaboration with our R&D team.

I want more adjustment possibilities or need to upgrade my chair.

You can upgrade or switch the chair top on some of our models. Contact Norsap head office to evaluate your options.

What is the maximum load of my chair?

The maximum load depends on the conditions the chair operates under and the equipment installed on it.

Consult your regional dealer or Norsap head office if you need guidance.

Frequently asked questions regarding Norsap 3D files

Can I download 3D files of my chair or rail?

We have 3D files for every chair and rail available.

Just go to your preferred chair or rail and download the .zip file. You will find this under “Datasheets” or the quick menu “Show downloads.” Inside the .zip file, you will find the chair or rail in Parasolid format (.x_t).

The Parasolid file format is native to the Parasolid geometrical kernel* and used in various applications, including SolidWorks, SolidEdge, NX, Microstation, Ansys, and Abaqus.

*A geometrical kernel is the core software component in a CAD system that handles the creation, manipulation, and visualization of geometric shapes.

Frequently asked questions regarding Ergonomics

Why are over- and underarm adjustments necessary on a chair?

Overarm and underarm adjustments help position the armrests correctly for the user’s body and seating position.

If the armrests are not properly adjusted, the chair may provide less support and stability. This can lead to discomfort in the shoulders, neck and upper back, especially during longer periods of sitting.

For example, if the armrests are positioned too far forward or too far back, the user may not receive proper arm support. This can cause the shoulders to lift, the upper body to lean forward, or the user to sit in an unnatural position.

Correct armrest adjustment helps support the arms in a relaxed position and allows the chair to be adapted to different users, tasks and seating preferences.

How does a front tilt on the seat benefit the user?

Front tilt, also known as seat pan angle adjustment, allows the seat angle to be adjusted to the user’s body and seating position.

Adjusting the front of the seat pan can help change how body weight is distributed across the seat. This may reduce pressure under the thighs and behind the knees, which are common pressure points during long sitting periods.

Front tilt can also help support a more upright and active seating position. By allowing the seat angle to better match the user’s posture, the chair can provide improved comfort and support during use.

What are musculoskeletal problems?

Musculoskeletal problems are conditions that affect the muscles, joints, bones, tendons, ligaments and other tissues that support and move the body.

Common examples include lower back pain, neck and shoulder strain, tendon irritation, joint discomfort and pain in the hands, wrists or arms.

These problems can be influenced by several factors, including poor posture, repetitive movement, static sitting positions, vibration, lack of support or prolonged strain on the body.

In seated work, good support and proper adjustment can help reduce unnecessary strain and make it easier to maintain a comfortable and stable posture over time.

How do Norsap chairs support ergonomics?

Chairs from Norsap are designed to provide comfortable and supportive seating for marine and offshore environments.

Several adjustment features can help the user find a more suitable seating position:

Adjustable lumbar support
Many Norsap chairs have adjustable lumbar support, which helps support the lower back and makes it easier to maintain a comfortable seated position. The lumbar support can be adjusted to better match the user’s body and preferred sitting position.

Adjustable armrests
Norsap chairs often have adjustable armrests, which may help reduce unnecessary strain on the shoulders and neck. By adjusting the armrests to the proper height and position, users can support their arms more naturally during longer periods of sitting.

Ergonomic design
Norsap chairs are designed with ergonomics in mind. This means the chair can be adjusted to support different users, working positions and seating preferences.

Together, these features help support posture, comfort and adjustment during longer periods of sitting. Correct adjustment may help reduce unnecessary strain and make it easier to maintain a stable and comfortable seated position.

Frequently asked questions regarding Norsap pedestals

Are Norsap boat seat pedestals universal?

All our seat pedestals are universal and includes sliders for easier installation process.

Go to the desired seat pedestal with the features you need and compare the dimensions on the interface with your product. If you need assistance choosing the right pedestal, contact one of our dealers near you or one of our sales managers to get the perfect pedestal for your boat.

What is the best boat seat pedestal?

The best boat seat pedestal is the one that gives the correct seating height, movement and stability for the boat and the user.

A fixed-height pedestal is suitable when the seating position is already defined. An adjustable-height pedestal is useful when different users need the same seat, or when the seating position changes between relaxed and active use. Spring or gas-dampened versions can improve comfort where movement and impact are part of the environment.

Norsap seat pedestals are designed for marine installations where stability, rotation and long-term durability matter.

Do I need a swivel plate for my boat seat?

A swivel plate is useful when the seat needs to rotate independently of the pedestal or seating base.

It can make entry and exit easier, improve access in compact interiors or allow the seat to turn towards another area when the boat is not underway. Many Norsap seat pedestals already include rotation, so the correct solution depends on the seat, pedestal and installation.

How do I clean my leather chair and ensure long-lasting leather quality?

As a natural product, leather is very durable and hardwearing, but all leather products require cleaning and protection. By following these instructions, you will ensure long-lasting leather quality. Never place leather furniture closer than 20-30cm to a radiator or in direct sunlight.

LEATHER CLEANING

Cleaning removes everyday dirt and stains from your leather. The leather will develop grease spots or discoloration over time without proper cleaning. To avoid this, clean with Soft Cleaner regularly. We advise once a month.

LEATHER PROTECTION

Protect your leather to maintain its original quality. Use Leather Protection Cream 2-4 times a year. The Leather Protection Cream will protect against spots and preserve the leather’s softness.

You can also read more about the leather we use here

… but what about the fabric?

Fabric requires regular light vacuuming. Occasional cleaning should be done with a reputable brand of upholstery shampoo, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

You can read more about the fabric composition and abrasion resistance here

… but can I easily replace any cushion on any chair?

Yes. On most chairs, you can replace the backrest cushion by undoing a few clips or screws.

On Norsap 1100, Norsap 1600, and Norsap 2000 with leather backrests, the backrest cushion is part of the mechanical tilt adjustment. Make sure you have the correct instructions on how to replace these cushions before you start.

If there is lumbar support or any other integrated accessories in the backrest, specify this when ordering replacement cushions.

Does the leather used in our chairs contain Chromium?

No, the standard leather supplied with our chairs is Chromium-free. We are committed to ensuring our materials meet high-quality standards, focusing on safety and environmental responsibility. If you have any further questions about the specific materials used in our products, please feel free to reach out to us.

… but why does some suppliers use Chromium?

Chromium is commonly used in the leather tanning process because it provides several benefits, particularly in terms of durability and flexibility. It makes leather more resistant to water, heat, and wear, while also offering a smoother texture and better color retention. Chromium salts, such as chromium sulfate, help speed up the tanning process, which is especially useful for mass production.

However, the use of chromium, specifically chromium VI (Cr(VI)), can pose environmental and health risks, which is why there are increasing regulations and concerns regarding its use. Chromium VI can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, and it is classified as a carcinogen in high concentrations. For this reason, some suppliers are shifting to alternative, chromium-free tanning methods, which are safer for both the environment and consumers.

The growing demand for eco-friendly and non-toxic materials has led to innovations in vegetable tanning and other processes that avoid chromium altogether, offering a safer, more sustainable alternative for high-quality leather production

I am going to move or store my chair. Does Norsap sell covers?

Yes, we offer covers for all our chairs, seat cushions, and armrests.

Contact Norsap or your regional dealer to place your order.

What is the best boat seat cleaner?

If you need the best boat seat cleaner, we suggest using the Soft Cleaner for Leather by Leather Master or Keralux. It is water based and biodegradable, a gentle but effective cleaning liquid.

Be sure to use a suitable cleaner and protectant for your leather types.

What is the best boat seat protectant?

The best boat seat cleaner and protectant we have found and deliver with our chairs, seats, and cushions is from Leather Master Scandinavia or Keralux. When you receive a Norsap chair, we include one pack of Leather Protection Cream from Leather Master or Keralux so you can start protecting your chair on day one.
